A business plan is the skeletal bone of any business venture. It is a strategic roadmap that will help your business attain the set goals. The plan helps you look at the industry, customers, competitors, opportunities and threats. You are able to view your company objectively and recognize your capabilities, resources, advantages, strengths and weaknesses.

Before you write a business plan, you must have parts of the business in place.

• Company - Include organization name, vision, objectives, members and contact information.
• Problem - Describe the problem that is present and why your company wants to target it.

• Competition - Have a complete view of the competitive landscape. Compare your strong and weak points to that of your competitors.

• Financial projections - Graphically project a five year forecast containing key metrics like customer numbers, earnings, and other essential data.
• Current status and achievements - Clarify the status of your business in terms of products or services and what you aim to achieve.

You basically need to prepare a presentation based on your company's objectives to scrutinize it effectively.

While writing the business plan, try not to exceed 20 pages in length. Keep it short and simple. After all a lengthy and wordy document is not very exciting to read! A good start to a business plan is a well articulated Executive Summary including the company's technology and products, the market opportunity, competition, funds requested to sustain and grow the company.

Limit your financial projections to a couple of pages. This is very important because no one knows the future of economy and how your business will do in the far future. For the last two years, I have used TurboTax Business Corporations and Partnerships software to complete my partnership tax return. I have found it to be the best quality software I have ever used.

I also tried Tax Cut Home and Business software. I found that Turbo Tax software was far and away better than Tax Cut, which is put out by H & R Block. For example, Tax Cut never permitted me to view my forms and review them. Instead, it conducted an interview, and kept me trapped within that interview.

TurboTax Business, on the other hand, allowed me to review my return on paper before continuing with the interview process. I could check for errors, both in the software and by saving the file into PDF format. This was very essential for me since in my business tax return, I cannot afford to make mistakes.

TurboTax allows the user to import information from Quickbooks, if necessary, and also imports data from previous returns if you used TurboTax to complete your return in past years.

One feature I found very useful was that previous years of TurboTax business were available on Intuit's site. This was extremely helpful, since my business is on a fiscal year, and by the time I'm ready to do my return, the next year's software is on the shelves. This is easily found by searching on the previous year on their website.

The program is organized into convenient sections, each of which is represented by tabs at the top of the screen. If at any point you feel that you want to go to another part of the interview, you can do so easily by clicking these tabs. These include Start, Income, Deductions, Depreciation, Balance Sheet, Misc., Review, State, Print & File and Finish.

The software computes most things for you, but if you feel you need to override one of its calculations, you can do so easily. The software will even warn you if you have too many overrides, since this can put you at risk for an audit. TurboTax Business Corporations and Partnerships Software will also give you basic information on other audit risk factors, such as the type of business being run, operating in a certain industry, warnings about changes which need prior approval, etc.

Other features in TurboTax Business Software include a very extensive help system. You can search the help files on your own computer; and if you can't find the answer to your problems there, you can choose to be forwarded to the TurboTax website. The help files include IRS publications so that you don't have to scour the web for them. They can be accessed offline. The program can also connect you to TurboTax Service and Support, and Live Tax Advice. The software includes error checking, and links to have your return reviewed by a professional. This service permits you to receive full protection from professionals in the case that you are audited. You need not speak to the IRS. They will do all the talking.

Small business bookkeeping software can be a valuable business tool. On the positive side, how much will you save in accounting and staff costs once the software is established? Will the software enable you to identify areas to improve business performance?
3. Is there support available?
   Does the software supplier provide on site training? Are courses available? Is there a help desk available, and is it available at times to suit your business? Does it have a toll free phone number? Does the software provide detailed training materials either online, through the software, or by way of paper manuals? Is the software a well known brand that your accountant is familiar with?
4. Is the software able to be upgraded when needed?
   As you grow your business you need to ensure that your accounting software can grow with it. Make sure your software can be easily upgraded and that the cost is factored into your business plan. The need to change to alternate software could prove costly when you take into account purchase and training costs.
5. Know your software.
   Most software packages are valuable tools, and have considerable capabilities. Get to know the full functionality of your software and make it work for you. You may find that it can do considerably more than you thought possible. A bit more time and money spent training at the start could prove invaluable over time.
   Remember, your accounting software is a powerful tool to help you manage your business. It can improve accuracy, save time and money, and provide a multitude of crucial data in the form of graphs and reports

Since they say that technically you have only seven seconds to make a first impression, it is important that your business card enhances that experience, not ruins it. The color and font you use on your card are as equally as important than the logo and contact information.

The color of the card should flow with the theme in total representation of your business. For example, if your company is providing construction building materials then you would have absolutely no reason to have a pink or black card. A better suited choice would be a neutral, earth tone color and design. This helps to display information about the product without any words at all. If the client can glance through their business cards and spot yours because the theme matches in their mind what they're looking for then you've done your job. Gradient backgrounds seem to be very popular and are very easy on the eyes to look at. The gradual color variance seems to draw the eyes in, even relaxing them a bit.

The font on your business card is just as important. You want to keep your fonts to a maximum of two different sizes on the card. Anything more than that on such a small area is just too confusing and annoying to the eye. The font should be a typeface that is easy to read. Sure, some fonts are really interesting and can certainly "glam" up a card but they can also ruin it. If the prospect can't read the card clearly or has to squint to figure it out the wording, the card is worthless. The size of the font plays a key factor as well. A font should be at or above 8mm. This is a comfortable size. The only things that should ever be printed smaller are items such as the ABN or QBSA numbers and those may use a 6mm font.

Your business card should be well constructed, easy to read and display vital information. It is essential that you take the time to design your card appropriately so that it can be used as a proper business tool.
